It is widely accepted that many parties to family law proceedings in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia are self-represented due to the prohibitive costs involved in using a lawyer.

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia are accustomed to self-represented litigants and unlike the civil law courts, the family law courts attempt to accommodate self-represented parties.

A garden variety contested family law property matter might cost between $35,000 and $70,000 for each party. Often the cost is ultimately funded from the equity in the family home which is sold to meet legal costs.

Do it Yourself (DIY) Arrangement

Under the DIY arrangement your legal costs can be controlled and referable to the specific task being undertaken by us. For example, you might require us to prepare your initiating application and related documents to be filed in Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. The document drafting will be done by an experienced family law lawyer and emailed to you for consideration and feedback. Once you are satisfied with the document, we will guide you further in relation to the subsequent procedural requirements of filing and service. Any court correspondence thereafter will be sent directly to you. We will remain on standby ready to assist at any time as your matter proceeds. How much assistance you seek will depend on your financial resources. We will do as much or as little as you require. We can assist you to spend your limited funds in a more cost effective way. For example, if you have limited financial resources you may wish to engage us to prepare your initiating application or response but then you will appear at later procedural hearings on your behalf.  If your matter proceeds to a trial or final hearing then we can assist you with a trial affidavit or briefing a barrister for the final hearing. This way your money is being spent on the critical parts of the process and not wasted on the the administrative, routine or merely procedural parts which you can attend to yourself.
